Running Toward Recovery:
Howard’s Story of Resilience & Hope
Howard’s journey with Supportive Living has been one of incredible strength, perseverance, and hope. A resident of SLI’s Douglas House in Lexington, Howard has faced more than his share of challenges—but through it all, he’s never stopped moving forward.
At just 10 years old, Howard underwent his first kidney transplant. Years later, while in college, complications with his health caused him to faint and suffer severe brain injury. He spent six weeks in a coma and several years in various rehabilitation programs, including time in a nursing home, as he worked to regain independence and stability.
In 2010, at age 27, Howard moved into Douglas House—a turning point in his recovery. Despite ongoing health struggles and a demanding dialysis routine seven days a week, Howard remained determined to keep progressing. Then, in July 2017, he received the call he had been waiting for: a matching kidney was available.
Following a successful transplant and a long 90-day recovery, Howard was finally able to end his 15-year dialysis routine. Soon after, he returned to the treadmill as part of SLI’s Neuro-Fit Program—this time with renewed energy and purpose. “I’m thankful to all my friends who have supported me, to my family, to the summer interns who visited me, and to everyone at Douglas House,” Howard shared during his recovery.
Today, Howard continues to inspire others as one of the original participants in SLI’s Neuro-Fit Assisted Exercise Program—a life-changing wellness initiative that helps hundreds of individuals recovering from brain injuries improve their strength, mobility, and overall quality of life.
“Neuro-Fit allows me to challenge myself,” Howard says. “Every participant has the opportunity to set and meet their own goals.” For him, one of those goals has been completing the 5K race at the Battlegreen Run—a milestone he has proudly achieved for the past two years, supported by Neuro-Fit interns and staff cheering him on every step of the way.
Beyond the physical progress, Howard values the sense of community that Neuro-Fit has brought into his life. “It’s given me the opportunity to improve my strength in a fun environment where I’ve met many new people,” he says.
As he prepares to participate once again in this year’s Battlegreen Run, Howard emphasizes the importance of giving back to the programs that have helped him—and so many others—move forward. “All the money donated helps provide each individual the opportunity to achieve their own goals,” he explains. “Donations go toward adaptive equipment and scholarships, ensuring that these programs remain accessible for everyone.”
Howard’s determination, persevering spirit, and commitment to helping others capture the heart of Supportive Living Inc.’s mission. His message to the community is simple but powerful:
“Please consider donating today to support others like me—to help more people continue benefiting from these life-changing programs.”
